Sustainability
Matters
918 Coffee Co’s real party piece however
was to revolutionise the fate of coffee
grounds, the first company to use spent
coffee from espresso machines as a
commercial fuel, 100% of which was
previously black bagged with the rest of
the rubbish.
Ironically the same spent coffee was the
most expensive thing in the bin of most
cafes, often containing over 40% water, it
weighs a lot more than most coffee shop
waste at a time when commercial waste
carriers were moving to charging by
weight versus by volume as previously
done.
When coffee grounds are put to landfill
in larger volumes, they act as a catalyst
for accelerated organic decomposition
which inevitably produces larger volumes
of methane, another environmental
hazard.
918 Coffee Co.
Speaking with Justin at 918 Coffee it’s clear that whilst ten years
ago his business was way ahead of the sustainability curve, the
curve has begun to catch up! However, Justins commitment to
doing the right thing embraces that as great news for even more
innovation and developments that lie ahead.
Justin's business has challenged the traditional roastery in every
part of sourcing, roasting and packaging and delivery, seeking to
exploit knowledge and awareness to drive change in his business.
He buys from a range of plantations around the world where
sustainability are key factors in the coffee production. One such
plantation is the Santa Anita estate in Costa Rica, which was the MAY/JUNE. 2023 | ISSUE 30
first coffee plantation to be recognised as Carbon Neutral, using
solar energy to power their processing plant as well as many
other green technologies.
