Sustainability
Matters
918 Coffee Co.
Justin and his team of eco boffins discovered a way to reuse the
coffee grounds, exploiting their calorific value and using them as
a source of heat and energy to roast his green beans. He
established a local free collection service for cafes and hotels,
collecting their previously binned coffee waste, and then, after
careful drying, was able to use it as a fuel source for the roasting
process. They call it EcoRoast™ technology, which is a truly zero
waste roasting technology.
918 Coffee Co has successfully been removing coffee grounds
from the waste stream for the last 10 years which is estimated to
have diverted over 500T from landfill, they have gone on to be
awarded numerous national and international awards including
the coveted certified B Corp status in early 2022, with the highest
rating for any coffee business in the world!
This passionate environmental and
sustainability focus has driven the
business to explore and challenge every
aspect of their operation. Their heating
system is powered by their combustible
waste, their showroom is constructed
from salvaged and recycled materials,
they setup a rainwater harvesting system
for use in their processes, they recycle
and reuse a large percentage of their
incoming packaging as void fill packing to
avoid unnecessary plastic usage, they use
biodegradable packaging in place of
traditional plastic wraps, whilst their own
suppliers must meet their standards too.
They also actively work with other local
companies to help reduce the amount of
waste they produce by incorporating it
into some of their own processes.
It’s truly a closed loop system - fresh MAY/JUNE. 2023 | ISSUE 30
