Driving in Portugal
If you are unsure of the rules of driving in the
Algarve, these tips may help you:
You MUST carry your driver's licence and some ID
with you if you are the driver of the car. If you have
one of the new licences with your picture on it, this
will act as ID as well.
You should also carry your passport.
Your car rental document should also be available for
inspection. You can be fined on the spot if you do not
produce these documents.
Speed limits are as follows:
In towns 60 km per hour = 37.5 miles per hour *
On main roads 90 km per hour = 56.25 miles per hour
On the motorway 120 km per hour = 75 miles per hour
* In many areas that are built up there are control measures to slow traffic to 50 km per
hour. Please be aware of these.
Seat belts must be worn at all times. If belts are available on the back seats, then these
must be worn too.
Children under the age of 14 must travel in the back seats of the car. Do not be fooled by
the fact that you will see Portuguese children in the front seats, standing or kneeling or
leaning out of windows. They are breaking the law.
Petrol Station
The nearest petrol station to Quinta do Lago is down the road to "Q" roundabout, then
straight on, with Quinta Shopping on your left, take the first turning on the right towards
Almancil and the petrol station is about 1 km on the right. There is also a petrol station
at the airport if you want to fill up the tank before returning your hire car.
Please note that your travel insurance probably does not cover any items left unattended
in your car.
Toll Road
From 2012 toll charges have been imposed for using the A22 motorway which runs
parallel to the coast along most of the Algarve. These are collected electronically rather
than using manned booths and the car hire companies will advise you how you can pay if
you use this road when you collect your car.
