                       Cidofovir

                       • a monophosphate nucleotide analog.
                       • activated exclusively by host cell kinases and the active diphosphate
                          inhibits DNA polymerases.

                   Uses:
                       • Treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV)
infections in AIDS patients to treat CMV
retinitis that is unresponsive to other
                           drugs.

                                               B. Anti-influenza Agents

                  • There are three related influenza viruses, A, B and C, of which C is relatively

rare and causes only mild infections.

                  • All three reproduce in the same way

                  • possess the enzyme neuraminidase which is responsible for liberating the

newly formed virus particles from the host cell.
                       Oseltamivir- Zanamivir

                    • There are two neuraminidase inhibitors available
                    • Oseltamivir: an ethyl ester prodrug for oral administration.
                    • Zanamivir which is administered by inhalation.

                    • Both drugs are active against influenza A and B
                    • Neither drug has activity against other viruses.
