Cidofovir
• a monophosphate nucleotide analog.
• activated exclusively by host cell kinases and the active diphosphate
inhibits DNA polymerases.
Uses:
• Treatment of cytomegalovirus (CMV)
infections in AIDS patients to treat CMV
retinitis that is unresponsive to other
drugs.
B. Anti-influenza Agents
• There are three related influenza viruses, A, B and C, of which C is relatively
rare and causes only mild infections.
• All three reproduce in the same way
• possess the enzyme neuraminidase which is responsible for liberating the
newly formed virus particles from the host cell.
Oseltamivir- Zanamivir
• There are two neuraminidase inhibitors available
• Oseltamivir: an ethyl ester prodrug for oral administration.
• Zanamivir which is administered by inhalation.
• Both drugs are active against influenza A and B
• Neither drug has activity against other viruses.
