• Are most effective if taken within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms
• Reduce the duration of the symptoms by about 1 –
1.5 days.
• Reduce complications in elderly patients or
those with chronic diseases.
• Useful for postexposure prophylaxis of influenza,
but again need to be administered within a few hours of exposure.
Amantadine- Rimantadine
• Prevent uncoating by inhibiting an ion – channel protein (M2 protein)
• treatment of only influenza A infections
• it is effective if given soon after the onset of symptoms
Ribavirin- Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)
• A nucleoside analog that inhibits viral replication by inhibiting viral
mRNA polymerase
• Host cell kinases convert to active monophosphate and triphosphate form
• Indications:
• Treatment of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in children.
• Treatment of chronic hepatitis C (HCV) infections in combination with
other antiviral agents.
