011 While learning to work with technology is extremely important,
O r g a n i z a t i o n s provide many other kinds of learning opportunities to their
employees. For example, employers that emphasize teamwork and encourage employee
problem solving may offer courses in effective communication and group work. This
appears in our programmes like “partners in progress” conducted by Central Board of
workers Education, which sensitizes the union representatives as how their role is
significant in the success of O r g a n i z a t i o n . Other Programmes on team work,
Creativity and communication skills are regularly conducted at the corporate Learning
and Development centres of, Public Sector Undertakings.
012 As the price of health insurance has increased dramatically, Companies have
begun providing workers with information about how to become healthier by, for
example, Public Sector Undertakings have conducted workshops (“Swasthya” and
“Sanjeevani”) on health covering stress management, lifestyle disorders, alternative
therapies like yoga ,nutrition and diet. Another growing trend in Indian Organizations is
to provide LT&D sessions on issues that affect employee relations. The topics of such
L e a r n i n g sessions include reservation policy of SC, ST’s and OBC’s, Women
Empowerment, etc. The Organizations are becoming more humanistic by organizing
programs such as Post Retirement Planning programmes and preparing them to properly
manage their health and wealth in their old age after retirement.
013 Also Organizations work on lot of ToT (Transfer of Technology) projects
requiring additional Learning in foreign languages, For instance, P u b l i c S e c t o r
U n d e r t a k i n g s regularly provide L T & D to its employees in foreign languages, like
Russian and French.
014 Yet another trend in Learning, Training and Development is Customer
Training, since it makes a good business sense to have a knowledgeable customer, so that
maintenance issues can be significantly brought down while ensuring good relations. Many
organizations and Public Sector units in India involved in business are organizing
customer training programs.
Cross Training or "Multi-skilling"
015 As Organizations looked for ways to respond quickly to changing markets and
personnel needs, the concept of cross training began to emerge. Whereas in the past
employees were trained to perform only one job, the companies of today are recognizing
the value of cross training employees to perform multiple tasks. In this model, employees
are provided the structured trainings (Combination of Learning and Training) in a wide
range of skills. If an employee's job becomes obsolete or if there is an overwhelming
need somewhere in the Organization, the employee can easily transfer to another position
and immediately begin to work productively.
