Learning and Development in Small and Mid-sized Organizations
024 In small and mid-sized organizations (those with fewer than five hundred
employees), the Learning and Development Centre typically consists of one person.
Usually this person does not run LT&D programs themselves. Instead, this individual
functions as a broker of LT&D services. This means that he or she is responsible for
finding outside consultants who can provide LT&D Programmes to meet the
Organization's needs at a time and place convenient to employees, and at a reasonable
cost. In order to maximize LT&D efforts, the company trainer may work with
production line managers and supervisors on developing and conducting their own
on-the-job training, Learning sessions. Small Organizations with limited funds may send
their employees to other companies for LT&D Programmes, or they may ask their major
suppliers to help with the costs.
MoU’s with Colleges and Universities
025 Business organizations and higher education often form partnerships
in Learning, Training and Development. For Instance in India Public Sector
Undertaking (PSU) too engages with institutions like IIT’s to expose its executives with
latest technologies. Also it offers its own expertise to students from these reputed
institutions by providing project works in their manufacturing units.
External/government/private institutions
026 A growing number of institutions are in the business of Learning, Training
and Development of employees of Various Organizations. For Instance, PSUs too
select some reputed training centres like ATI’s (Advance Training Institutes) or other
private Companies or Consultants who can provide relevant and cost effective training.
Learning and Training methods
027 Delivery systems for Learning and training include traditional and well
equipped classroom instruction, on-the- job instruction, and instruction via technology.
Technology-based instruction includes computer-based training (CBT), Group Projects,
Individual Projects and Case Studies.
Best ways of learning
028 Should employee L e a r n i n g a n d T raining be conducted through
technology or in person? This is a difficult question to answer because not everyone learns
in the same way. Therefore, in order to address the best way to teach employees, some
companies have decided to combine the above two methods to meet the learning needs of a
wider range of employees.
