“Research starts with a problem and ends with a problem”
Lesson 1: Definitions of Nursing Research
Research is defined as a formal, systematic, rigorous and intensive process
used for solutions to nursing problems or to discover and interpret new facts and trends
in clinical practice, nursing education or nursing administration (Waltz and Bausell,
2001).
Research is also concerned with nurses themselves, their attitude and
behaviour in dealing with patients and their environment, their personal and
professional relationship with the members of the health team and the intrinsic and
extrinsic factors affecting nursing practice which encompasses the framework of
scientific research.
Research is a scientific study or investigation that is pursued to discover
theories and concepts based on new facts and information and its practical application.
This information is obtained in the form of natural and unbiased data or facts from the
real world. It is research that deals with knowledge that directly and indirectly
influences the growth and development of professional nursing practice
Research is also a systematic collection and analysis of data to illuminate,
describe or explain new facts and relationships. In its broadest sense, it is an attempt
to find solutions to problems. It is likewise a collection of data in a controlled situation
for purposes of prediction or explanation, hence, research is concerned with the whole
of nursing" (Treece and Treece, 2002).
Research also refers to a problem solving process that utilizes scientific
discovery, and "develop ideas and theories that give meaningful answers to complex
questions about human beings and their environment. To learn more of nursing.
Research helps to establish a broader framework through which one can practice
judiciously and safely. This is possible only if nurses take time to conduct scientific
investigations in all nursing situations requiring clinical judgement. Therefore, research
is important providing relevant, reliable and unbiased answers to questions tor better
understanding of what nursing is all about.
