Research helps knowledge grow and develop, determines its significance
in order to modify or develop new ones, and or revises this knowledge,
                           based on current research findings.

                   11. Prevents undesirable client’s reactions.

Research predicts Outcome and potential problems of clients, hence it
requires the balancing of phenomena that will generate positive results and
                           control undesirable.

                   12. Develops a considerable degree of confidence.

Professional undertakings are intended to achieve desired client behaviours.
Adequate knowledge sustains self-confidence of a nurse that makes work
easier and lighter, unburdened with uncertainties and doubtful consequences
of actions intended to restore client’s health.

Lesson 3: Role of Nurses in Research

With the current emphasis on EBP, it has become every nurse's responsibility
to engage in one or more research activity along a continuum of research
participation. At one end of the continuum are those nurses whose involvement in
research is indirect. Users (consumers) of nursing research reports to develop new
skills and to keep up-to-date on relevant findings that may affect their practice.
Nurses are expected to maintain this level of involvement with research, at a
                   minimum.

                   1. As Principal Investigators
Nurses need special research preparation and raining to conduct a
                            scientific study.

                   2. As Member of a Research Team.
A nurse may be the data collector, conduct an experimental investigation,
and even consider this as part of her normal workload.
                   3. As Evaluator of Research Findings.
A nurse must determine the usefulness of research findings in her practice
of nursing and continuously relate these findings to actual situations,
which in turn, may lead to another investigation.

                   4. As Consumers of Research Findings.
Nurses are research users and beneficiaries and are apt to put these
findings into use in their practice. However, this must be judiciously done
to prove the reliability of research findings.

                                                                                                       8
