5. As Client Advocates in a Research Study.
Nurses must explain to these clients who are involved in the study, answer
their questions and support them as study participants. The ethics of
research must always prevail.
6. As Subjects of Research.
Nurses may also be study respondents who will provide data intended to
change and or improve nursing practice.
Lesson 4: Purposes of Nursing Research
Research in general, answers questions to solve problems. Research provides
tools for observation in order to generate knowledge as basis for predicting and
controlling the phenomenon. Thus, a nurse can apply this knowledge in practice and
prescribe accurately and professionally without untoward client response or reaction
nursing interventions (Polit and Beck, 2004).
Specifically, research aims to do the following tasks:
1. Description
Research describes a phenomenon that relates to the nursing profession
as well as to observe, define, and document nursing situations under
inquiry.
Example:
Nursing care. Refers to services rendered by professional and non-
professional nursing personnel to respond to the health needs and
problems of individuals, families, groups, and communities, intended
to bring comfort and ease to clients.
2. Exploration
Research explores the phenomenon being investigated by observing and
recording events or Situations occurring in at phenomenon; it answers
"what" questions on the phenomenon; and use enough examples to
become familiar with the phenomenon for more precise and accurate
understanding of this.
Examples
“What factors influence, affect or relate to the adjustment of patient to
hospitalization?"
“How do nurses react to aggressive patients?
“What do insulin-dependent patients want to know about their
ailment?"
