My ma jor con cern, com ing out of the ranks of sci ence, has been my own ar ro gance. How ar ro gant I was, to
put down oth er peo ple’s ideas that didn’t agree with my sci en tif ic view. When I went around the world and
spent time with in dig e nous peo ples and tribes, I re al ized that my ar ro gance just didn’t fit in. Like the man in
the sto ry by H. G. Wells, I thought that in the coun try of sci en tif i cal ly blind, the one-eyed man would be king.
In fact, I was the one who was blind. I was in tel lec tu al ly in ca pac i tat ed. As long as I held on to my sci en tif ic

view, I couldn’t see. I thought I saw ev ery thing; I didn’t see any thing. So I had to give up much of what I pre -

ing. I don’t think we’ve ar rived at that point yet. I don’t think we’re quite awake yet. I think we are all still
asleep—dream ing, hop ing, wish ing—me chan i cal ly re ly ing on our in tel lect to lead us out of the mo rass in
which we con stant ly find our selves. When we can use our heart and our spir it as well as our brain, that’s
when sci ence will be gin to adapt to a new world or der. 110
