Consciousness does not reside anywhere in the body. Man is an entity beyond all
materialist concepts. Man is metaphysical, and becomes human through the soul he
possesses. That soul belongs to our Lord, Almighty Allah, alone.

is exceedingly astonishing that the Western world (apart from very rare exceptions) seems to have so lit-

tle appreciation of this being so. 114

With the soul he pos sess es, man is an en ti ty en dowed with such con cepts as hon or, love, re spect,
friend ship, loy al ty and hon esty, and is able to hold and op pose ideas. In the same way that none of
the cells in your fin ger tip is able to think and make de ci sions, or grieve or re joice, the neu rons in the
brain, which have a sim i lar struc ture, have no means of pos sess ing met a phys i cal at trib utes. This is
one fact that ev ery one can clear ly un der stand, with out the need for sci en tif ic proof.

Indeed, ma te ri al ists are al so aware of this. But their ma te ri al ist prej u dices and their er ror of thin-
k ing that sci ence con sists sole ly of mat ter im pel them to dis tort the truth. Yet what they main tain in
the name of ma te ri al ism in di cates a se ri ous log i cal col lapse. There is no dif fer ence be tween some one

who says “Our thoughts are the prod uct of at oms” and some one else who be lieves his dreams to be
re al or who makes up un be liev a ble sto ries and then be lieves them. However, rath er than ad mit the
ex is tence of Allah, ma te ri al ists are pre pared to risk this hu mil i at ing state of af fairs.
The fact is that man is an en ti ty who per ceives with the soul be stowed on him by Allah, who
thinks with that soul, who speaks with it, and re joic es, feels hap pi ness, takes de ci sions, rules na tions

and gov erns so ci e ties with it. Man is an en ti ty with the soul giv en by Allah, and that soul is eter nal.
The body is mere ly a ve hi cle in this world. Man will leave the body be hind when he dies, yet the so-
ul will con tin ue. He will now re side ei ther in Paradise or in Hell.

He [Allah] is the Raiser of ranks, the Possessor of the Throne, He sends the Spirit by His com mand to
which ev er of His servants He wills so that he may warn man kind about the Day of Meeting: the Day
when they will is sue forth and when not one thing about them will be hid den from Allah. “To whom does
the king dom be long to day? To Allah, the One, the Conqueror! Every self will be re paid to day for what it
earned. Today there will be no in jus tice. Allah is swift at reck on ing.” (Qur’an, 40:15-17)
