tity, cer tain ly knows ev ery thing there is to know about the world that He has cre at ed as an il lu sion,
and about man, in to whom He has breathed His Own Spir it.
This is a very sim ple mat ter for Allah. As we live our lives, and ex pe ri ence those per cep tions we
im ag ine to be “the ex ter nal world,” it is not the il lu so ry ob jects and oth er peo ple that are clos est to us,
but rath er our Lord.
In one verse Allah re veals that:
We cre at ed man and We know what his own self whis pers to him. We are near er to him than his jug u lar
vein. (Qur’an, 50:16)
If some one be lieves that he has di rect ex pe ri ence of the phys i cal world and im ag ines that his own
body is made up of mat ter alone, he falls in to a se ri ous er ror and fails to grasp this great truth. He im -
ag ines that Allah is up in the sky or some where else far re moved from us (Surely He is be yond any
such misconception) and fails to re al ize that Allah is ac tu al ly clos er to him than even his own body.
However, once he re al iz es that he can nev er have di rect con tact with the out side world and must ex -
pe ri ence ev ery thing in his mind alone, then ev ery thing—the ex ter nal world, his car, the Sun and stars
he im ag ines to be so far away from him—will be come as a gar ment that en folds him,
all on the same plane. Allah has com plete ly en fold ed him and is in fi nite ly close to
him—as He has re vealed in the Qur’an:
If My ser vants ask you about Me, I am near. . . (Qur’an, 2:186)
It is es sen tial that peo ple live in this knowl edge. Someone who is un a -
ware of it will im ag ine that this tran si to ry world, to which he has been sent
sole ly for a test, is in fact the true life. He im ag ines that all his pas sions, ex -
pec ta tions and pleas ures need to be di rect ed to wards this world. A firm be -
lief that one can ex pe ri ence mat ter di rect ly may cause one to turn away
from be lief in Allah and to for get that we will be called in to His Presence
in the Hereafter. By im ag in ing this world to be ab so lute and striv ing to
ob tain its im ag i nary de lights, one may suf fer ter ri ble dis ap point ment
in the Hereafter. Allah has warned peo ple of the truth of this:
What! Are they in doubt about the meet ing with their Lord? What!
Does He not en com pass all things? (Qur’an, 41:54)
