anxieties of life, and that day will close on you unexpectedly like
a trap. For it will come upon all those who live on the face of the
whole earth. Be always on the watch, and pray..." (Luke, 21:34-36)
Set your minds on things above [in the hereafter], not on earth-
ly things. (Colossians, 3:2)
Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the
worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires
for other things come in and choke the word, making it un-
fruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, ac-
cept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times
what was sown (Mark, 4:18-20)
Each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged
away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth
to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death [wrath
of hell]. Don't be deceived, my dear brothers. (James, 1:14-16)
... In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything
he has cannot be my disciple. "Salt is good, but if it loses its salti-
ness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil
nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. "He who has ears to hear,

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they
come from your desires that battle within you? You
want something but don't get it. You kill and covet, but
you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight.
You do not have, because you do not ask God. When
you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with
wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on
