They Say What is Not in Their Hearts

He replied, "Isaiah was right when he prophesized about you
hypocrites; as it is written 'These people honor me with their

lips, but their hearts are far from me.'" (Mark, 7:6; Matthew
                 15:7-8)

... The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure
heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.   Some have
wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk.
They want to be teachers of the law [God's commandments],
but they do not know what they are talking about or what they
so confidently affirm. (1 Timothy, 1:3-7)

But one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, who was later to betray

him, objected, "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the mon-
ey given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages." He did not
say this because he cared about the poor but because he was
a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to
what was put into it. (John, 12:4-6)

                              They Worship for Show

While all the people were listening, Jesus said to his disciples,
"Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around
in flowing robes and love to be greeted in the marketplaces
and have the most important seats in the prayer houses and
the places of honor at banquets. They devour widows' houses
and for a show make lengthy prayers... Such men will be
punished most severely." (Luke, 20:45-47; Mark, 12:38-40)
