age, Allah made you think the en e my was
few er in num ber than it ac tu al ly was. He
al so showed you thus to their eyes, so they
would make no prep a ra tions for the bat tle.
This im pres sion was formed dur ing a state
of wake ful ness, not of sleep. Ibn Mas`ud says
that the en e my was shown to our eyes to be so
few in num bers be fore the bat tle of Badr that I
asked: "What do you think, are there about 100
of them?" That was be fore the bat tle be gan.
When it start ed, Allah gave the un be liev ers the
im pres sion that the faith ful were many in num -
ber. The un be liev ers were stunned and seized by
fear. Their strength was bro ken, and they saw
things for which they were not pre pared. This is
one of Allah's great mir a cles in the bat tle. … He
gave the be liev ers cour age against the un be liev -
ers so that they would wage war and so that He
would help His own ar my and de feat the su per -
sti tious [peo ple] and their ar my. In this way,
His word would be su pe ri or and the un be liev -
ers' word would be in fe ri or. All works re turn
to Allah. Allah op er ates in them as He wills.
