Sometimes both un be liev ers and be -
liev ers see each oth er as less nu mer ous
than they re al ly are. There is a rea son for
this mir a cle: when the Muslims saw that the
un be liev ers were few er in num ber than
they were, it gave them strength and im -
proved their mo rale. And when the un be liev -

ers saw the Muslim ar my, al ready less in
num ber than theirs, as even small er, they be -
came care less and were led to think that they
would be vic to ri ous. Given that in the world
of caus es no ar my can ap pear less nu mer -
ous than it is, this can on ly be a mi rac u -
lous man i fes ta tion of Allah's as sist ance:

Remember when Allah showed them to
you in your dream as on ly a few. If
He had shown you them as many,
you would have lost heart and quar -
relled about the mat ter; but Allah saved
you. He knows what your hearts con tain.
Remember when Allah made you see
them as few when you met them, and al so
made you seem few in their eyes. This
was so that Allah could set tle a mat ter
whose re sult was pre or dained. All mat ters
re turn to Allah. (Surat al-Anfal: 43-44)
