The Miracles of our Prophet (saas)
Then Allah sent down His se ren i ty on His Messenger and
on the be liev ers, sent down troops you could not see, and
pun ished the un be liev ers. That is how the un be liev ers are
re paid. (Surat at-Tawba: 26)
While Allah helped the Muslims with mir a cles, He al so
pun ished their en e mies for their on go ing cru el ty and op pres -
sion to ward those Muslims still in Mecca.
In his com men ta ry, Ibn Kathir in cludes a sto ry of those
who lived at this time:
On the au thor i ty of Abu Hurayrah (ra), Imam Muslim re -
port ed that the Prophet (saas) said: "I have been helped by hav -
ing ter ror (in stilled in the hearts of my en e mies), and I have
been giv en words (of wis dom) that are con cise though com pre -
hen sive in mean ing." 53
Another com men ta tor re lates that the un be liev ers' traps
and rus es will be foiled by the be liev ers' pa tience:
After Almighty Allah had for bid den us to take non-Muslims as our
pro tec tors and friends and told us why, He prom ised that He would
foil all of the un be liev ers' traps and snares as long as we had fear of
[and re spect for] Him and were pa tient. There were two sit u a tions
in when He act ed as the be liev ers' guard i an: on the Day of Uhud
and the Day of Badr. On these two days, Almighty Allah foiled the
en e mies' traps and snares on ac count of the be liev ers' pa tience and
fear of [and re spect for] Him. The proof of this as ser tion lies in the
fact that stead fast ness and fear of [and re spect for] Allah are men -
tioned in the pre ce ding verse: "But if you are stead fast and fear [and
re spect] Allah, their schem ing will not harm you in any way." 54
