The Prophet re plied: "I do not know how to read" (and add ed:) "The
an gel caught me (force ful ly) and pressed me so hard that I could not
bear it any more. He then re leased me and again asked me to read,
and I re plied: 'I do not know how to read,' where up on he caught me
again and pressed me a sec ond time un til I could not bear it any -
more. He then re leased me and asked me again to read, but again I
re plied: 'I do not know how to read (or, what shall I read?).'
Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me and then
re leased me and said: 'Read: In the Name of your Lord, Who
has cre at ed, has cre at ed hu man i ty from a [blood] clot.
