Syria. However, the Sham re gion is not lim it ed to Damascus, the Syrian
cap i tal, alone. As men tioned ear li er, Sham means "the left" and re fers to
those coun tries to the west of the Hijaz (which in cludes the cit ies of Mec-
ca and Medina).
During the ear ly years of the twen ti eth cen tu ry, civ il wars, re bel -
lions, con flict and great wars were al ready rag ing in this re gion. These
con flicts trig gered one an oth er and great ly im pact ed all the peo ple liv ing
there. The state ment that "this fitnah (trib u la tion)... will calm down on
the one hand and flare up again on an oth er" is note wor thy in that over the
last fif ty years, sev er al ma jor con flicts oc curred in this re gion, among
them the Suez War, the Six-Day War, the Yom Kippur War, the Lebanese
Civil War, and the on go ing ten sion in Palestine.
