Fire Cider
Fire cider is a traditional home remedy to ward off winter chills,
boost immunity, and aid in digestion. It has a spicy flavor and is
antioxidant-rich. Make a large batch and keep it in the fridge for
up to a year for long-term health benefits!
Mason jars with lids 1/4 cup grated ginger
24 oz apple cider vinegar 2 tbs grated horseradish
1/4 cup garlic, finely chopped 3 tbs turmeric
1/4 cup onion, finely chopped 2 tbs oregano
2 fresh hot peppers 2 tbs thyme
Finely chop the garlic, onion, fresh herbs, and hot pepper.
Consider wearing gloves for the pepper, depending on how hot it
is.
Grate your ginger, horseradish, and turmeric root.
Layer your ingredients in a large mason jar.
Pour enough apple cider vinegar into the jar to submerge all of
your ingredients. Put a lid on the jar and give it a good shake.
Allow the fire cider to steep for at least two weeks, shaking it
daily. It is even better if you can let it steep for a month. The color
will darken and change over time.
Strain your fire cider with a cheesecloth laid over a strainer or
colander.
Add honey to taste to the liquid. You can throw out the leftover
pieces of ginger, onion, etc.
Store your fire cider in a cool, dark place for up to a year. It is
considered shelf-stable, but keeping it in the fridge is preferable.
Take a tablespoon a day, or multiple times a day if you’re not
feeling well. Mix it with tea or juice if desired
