MEXICO CHAIRS THE COORDINATION AND WORK PROGRAM
OF THE MIKTA SPACE
At the beginning of the year 2019, Mexico assumed the annual coordination of the informal
dialogue and concertation space composed of Australia, Indonesia, the Republic of Korea, Turkey
and Mexico, better known as MIKTA. The Mexican Work Program was adopted at a vice-
ministerial meeting held on 7 February in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. The MIKTA countries supported
the proposed priorities and activities presented by the Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs,
Ambassador Julián Ventura. The central themes that will be promoted under the leadership of
Mexico will be social development, global governance and a sustainable future. A calendar of
activities was also agreed upon.
Mexico will develop a work program to identify opportunities for collaboration and activities to
promote the shared agenda of the five countries and will coordinate, with the MIKTA countries,
the promotion and visibility of actions of this informal dialogue space, particularly the one that can
be developed here in Australia.
The Mexican Work Program stands out for its social content, focus on inclusion and commitment
to multilateralism based on three pillars: 1) economic and tourism cooperation for social
development; 2) strengthening of the multilateral system; and 3) a sustainable future
through the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. These are three areas in which the members
of MIKTA have convergent visions, share interests and are active in the search and promotion of
agreements at the global level.
