Bilateral Trade 2018
In 2018, Mexico consolidated its position as the main trading partner of Australia in Latin America,
with a bilateral trade of A $ 3,411 million, which meant an increase of 20% over the previous year.
Mexico not only represents over 40% of all Australian trade to Latin America, but also Australia
imports more from Mexico than all of Latin America combined. This situation clearly reflects the
enormous growth potential that still exists between the two countries.
According to an Composition of Trade – Australia 2017-18
by DFAT comprising the period 2017-18 (July 1, 2017 -
June 30, 2018) there was also a 25% increase in imports
from Mexico to Australia and a 27% reduction in Australian
exports to Mexico. Likewise, the average growth of the
bilateral trade was 9% in the last 10 years. At the same time,
Mexico represented 72% of Australian trade with the Pacific
Alliance and 2.4% of trade with Comprehensive and
Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership
(CPTPP) countries.
Mexico and Australia are complementary. Both countries
share an important positioning in their respective regions
and coincide as nations of the Pacific. Globally, both are
members of G20, MIKTA Group (Mexico, Indonesia, South
Korea, Turkey and Australia), Pacific Alliance and CPTPP.
This global infrastructure will make possible greater
integration between the economies of the two countries.
Given the high economic complementarity and the growing
commercial exchange, the relationship between Mexico
and Australia is expected to continue with a positive trend,
particularly under the opportunities the CPTPP presents,
through which the economic relationship is projected to be
favored. In this sense, the Embassy will strengthen the
business promotion activities between both countries to
ensure the dynamism of bilateral economic agenda continues in 2019.
