3: Buckfastleigh to Princetown on the Dartmoor Rd

        Route 6 on the map.

To continue to Dartmoor from the Abbey, go back out the way you came in and at the flush r/bout
        turn left s/p “Exeter / Plymouth A38 / Totnes (A384)”.

Expert navigator check: Immediately after that turn you’ll cross the Dart River.

        0.1 mi 50.4872, -3.7706 Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn l. s/posted “Ashburton /
        Princetown “

        2.7 mi 50.5103, -3.7647 Turn l. s/p “Poundsgate 4 / Princetown 12”.

Expert navigator check: The Shell Service Station will be on your left. Check your fuel level . . .
it’s a long way to the next fuel stop.

Photo Opportunity. Along this next stretch of road you will run alongside the Dart River and cross
it on a one way bridge. You can get a great photo down the river from the bridge. Park just past it.

4.5 mi 50.5387, -3.8299 You may, if you are ancient like me, remember being taught the old
Devon folk song “Widecombe Fair”, which tells the story of Tom Pearce whose horse dies after
someone borrowed it to go to Widecombe Fair. Probably the most memorable bit is the list of his
        travelling companions:

“Us wants to go to Widdecombe Fair,
Wi’ Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davey, Daniel Whiddon, Harry Hawk,

Old Uncle Tom Cobbley and all,
Old Uncle Tom Cobbley and all.”

That’s where the phrase “Uncle Tom Cobbley and all” comes from, meaning everybody and
        everyone.

So if you have a burning urge to go to Widecombe-in-the-Moor, just past the village of
Poundsgate, turn r. at this point s/p “Leusdon / Ponsworthy / Widecombe”.

It’s about 3.4 miles up the road.

2.3 mi 50.5432, -3.87621 Cross the Dart River and enter Dartmeet. The confluence of the East
and West Dart Rivers is a few yards south of the bridge. Go exploring.

If you want to take a detour to Princetown, site of the infamous Dartmoor Prison . . .

4.5 mi 50.5573, -3.9692 After passing the Two Bridges Hotel on the left, turn left s/posted
        “Princetown B3212 / Plymouth (A386)”.
