9.5 mi 50.4921,-4.0861 Follow the A386 from the centre of the city to the i/s with the B3212 at
Yelverton. Take the second exit from the r/bout s/p “Princetown 6 / B3212”.
Expert navigator checkpoint: Just after leaving the r/bout look for PL20 Pilates and Yelverton
Television in a white building across the grass strip alongside the road.
5.8 mi 50.5441,-3.9904 Continue on the B3212, which is the old turnpike road built in the 18th
century, across Dartmoor National Park, to Princetown, most notable for the forbidding presence
of grim Dartmoor Prison. If you want a closer look, turn left in the middle of the town. Otherwise,
as you leave the town you’ll see it over to your left.
Like to know more about life inside the 200-year-old prison. Visit Dartmoor Prison Museum, just
past the prison entrance.
One of the appealing things about crossing Dartmoor is the animal life, some domesticated, some
wild. The Dartmoor ponies will especially make good photo subjects.
1.6 mi 50.5582,-3.9667 From Two Bridges you might like to take Wistman’s Walk which starts
just opposite the Two Bridges Hotel.
Expert Navigator Tip: Just after Two Bridges watch for a Y intersection. Bear left to remain on
the B3212.
3.8 mi 50.5943,-3.9114 In Postbridge. Great photo op of the
ancient clapper bridge here (pictured). Built in the 13th
century. It stands just downstream from the “new” bridge, built
in the 1780s. Take a shot of the old from the “new”. Clapper
bridges are constructed of huge stone slabs carried on stone
pillars. These are over 4m long and 2m wide, weighting 8 tons
each.
As you cross the roof of Dartmoor you get a magnificent view
of the Devon countryside.
6.0 mi 50.6482,-3.8169 The Miniature Pony Centre. Particularly appealling if you have small
persons aboard and you need a break from “Are we there yet?”
2.1 mi 50.6608,-3.7646 Moretornhampstead. If you are into cars, the Moreton Hampstead Motor
Museum might be of interest.
As you approach Exeter you’ll pass underneath the A30. You’ll cross the River Exe and just follow
the signs to the city.
You’ll pass under a footbridge (not the big overbridge just after crossing the river) and shortly after
come up to a large r/bout.
Turn left at the r/bout for the Cathedral and Guildhall Parking.
When you reach the No Entry signs at the one-way section of the street, turn left into Market St.
Follow Market St around turning right.
At the T i/s with Fore St do a quick right and left turn into Mary Arches St. GPS 50.7225,-3.5347.
Mary Arches Carpark will be on your right.
