Loch Lomond is one of Scotland’s loveliest lakes with wooded mountains cradling it in the
north and soft green hills dropping away from it in the south. It’s 23 miles long, between
half a mile and five miles wide and 630 ft deep at the the deepest point.
The lake was made famous in the song the Bonnie Bonnie Banks of Loch Lomond, said to be
have been written by one of Bonnie Prince Charlie’s supporters on the eve of his execution in
Carlisle jail. It tells how his spirit, travelling the “low road” after death, will return to Scotland before
his friends returning by the more usual, worldly “high road”.
The Clan Museum Clan Colquhoun Heritage & Visitor Centre in Luss tells the intertwined history
of Luss, the Colquhouns and neighbouring clans and provides visitors with an insight into what
makes Luss, Loch Lomond and Scotland unique. It is one of a number of small, focussed
museums in Scotland.
