Side trip to Loch Katrine
12.5 mi from Lochearnhead 56.2479, -4.2458 Turn r. for Loch Katrine, one of the loveliest lakes
in the highlands, made famous by Sir Walter Scott’s poem, The Lady of the Lake. You can cruise
the lake aboard the steamer SS Sir Walter Scott.
56.2337, -4.4292 The SS Walter Scott base, 8.4 miles from the turn off from the A84.
12.6 mi 56.2464, -4.2436 Kilmahog Woollen Mill.
Also the Trossachs Woollen Mill. See their power weaving demonstration produce the unique
Trossachs woollen rug.
1.2 mi 56.2442, -4.2163 Callander
Remain on the A84 into Stirling.
7.5 mi 56.1913, -4.0582 Doune. Doune Castle . Drive through the town and turn r., just before
the bridge.
The bridge across the River Teith here was built in 1535 by James Spittal, tailor to James IV. He
had once been refused a passage by the ferryman across the river because he had no money. So
a few years later he returned, built the bridge and put the uncooperative ferryman out of business.
7.3 mi 56.1246, -3.9548 You’ll come up to Ballengeich Roundabout with Stirling Castle looming

above you. Take the 2 exit s/p “Ring road / Erskine Br / A811” and a brown and white sign
“Stirling Castle”.
Turn l. a few yards past that exit on to Ballengeich Rd, s/p “Ballengeich Road”.
Follow this narrow road until you come to a hairpin right hand turn. That will take you up to the
castle parking area.
If you are not of a mind to go to the castle at this time just continue on the A811 into the city.

the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park to Glasgow.
Along the way you can take a side trip to lovely Lake Katrine. And you can if you wish, take a
