About Frances, Clyde, the Farm and Checkers

“Frances was a good cook. You could drop in on her at any time and she would have something for you to eat.
She always had a good feast on weekends. On the farm she always had company on weekends.

Clyde was a hard worker. When he wasn’t working he was always busy doing something, painting pictures, or
building something. Hardly ever sat down.
I don’t know how Frances met Clyde but he was a paratrooper in World War II, stationed in Germany. He sent her
home a little jacket made out of rabbit fur. He also sent home a machine gun. She used to go dancing with him
before he went into the service.
Frances worked for Jergen’s Soap Company for a while. Jim’s wife Dorothy worked there too. They wore a
                uniform.

She always used to take us out when we were younger to buy us clothes. She bought us a navy pea coat. She al‐
ways bought us pants and shirts to wear. I remember, we would walk to Sears and Roebuck with her. At that time
she was like a grown up to me.

I remember wanting her to play regular checkers with me and she wanted to play Chinese Checkers because she
was afraid I would get in a double corner and the game would never end. At that time she worked evenings and
would be late to work.” Earl Davison from an interview in 2003
