In the World of the Construction Practice

HUB’s construction practice has seen real growth in the last number of months. By
supporting the membership and regions with growing new business and better serving
existing HUB clients, our new dedicated practice leads, Kirk Chamberlain & Craig Tappel, have
proven themselves to be incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the industry,
cultivating the practice, and educating producers. It’s exciting to be part of this dynamic
specialty, and the success stories that are flowing in are indicative of the impact connecting
experts across regions has when it comes to winning business, retaining business, and coming
up with creative solutions and new markets. Doug Lyall, Western Canada region CSO and
newly minted Canadian construction lead, has also brought his signature energy and depth of
expertise to the practice and is already moving the Canadian strategy forward.

           Construction Practice: Surety Forum

The practice recently held a Surety focused forum in
November led by Barry Horgan. This meeting brought
together surety experts from across HUB –
resulting in takeaways and commitments to continue to
identify surety experts, mentor developing producers,
improve data and reporting, and leverage markets.
The first meeting of expert leadership from across
Canada led by Doug Lyall this November has also
produced an action list - including, but not limited to,
new approaches to improving benchmarking & data, developing products, and integrating
           risk management.

           Surety Forum: Thoughts from Barry

The consensus is, change is coming, and we need to
become more efficient, creative, automated and
                          expand the products we offer.
How can I get involved with surety, if I know nothing
about it? There are several ways you can get involved
in surety. Unfortunately, unlike insurance, education
opportunities are limited. I suggest the NASBP – there
are several classes you can take. Or, you can self-study and obtain
           an AFSB designation.
If you're in a region that does not do a lot of surety, I suggest you
reach out to a region that does, or Kirk (Chamberlain), Tim
(Blanchard) or myself (Barry Horgan) and we can direct you to a
resource that can help you develop a long-term plan to write more
           Surety in your region.
“You say surety, and they run.” Why is that the case? Producers run
from surety opportunities because it's such a unique form of
insurance, and producers rarely understand the process. It's more
credit-based, and it is more specialized.
