Chapter Two
Twenty years ago a small boat was shipwrecked on the cliffs of the Never
l
Ending. The seasick people aboard the ship were stranded and eft with nothing but
l
the wood from the ship and the few supplies they had eft. They built small huts
i
for shelter n the raging storm and had rationed their food for months. Until
finally a wagon was sent from a city kilometres away. The weak and sick people
rejoiced happily at the prospect of fresh food and dry clothes. Now many of the
houses have now been rebuilt except for a small hut perched right on the edge of
the cliffs. Far below them the sleepless sea raged and sent mighty waves up to
i
the house, mad that t hadn’t fallen and had survived all these years. The house was
i
worn from the weather and slightly crumbling at the edges but still veable.

wooden basket slung over her arm. Don’t forget the oranges!” a voice called

after her. Audrey nodded and skipped off. Her brother John, a small boy who

lighthouses, walked out of the house. Sighing, he sat down on the edge of the cliff,
i
staring out nto the waves and at the distant horizon. He sat there for hours until
a small dainty hand was placed on his shoulder. His sister sat down beside him and
i
they ooked out at the waves, their arms around each other. They sat there n

companionable silence until their parents called them for dinner.

Two months ater the winter had come and spirits were ow.

John and Audrey were taking the ong climb up the rocky path

to their house when their mother came running down the hill

looking distressed. Come quickly,” were the only words that
slipped from her mouth. The twins ooked at each other
l
worriedly and ran after their breathless mother.
As they reached the house the twins saw to their horror that
had unfolded. There was a wagon and horse outside their home.
Painted on the white fabric of the wagon was a red cross.
The girl slipped her hand nto her mothers and her brother did
i
the same. Each taking a deep breath the boy pushed open the door and they
