Audrey gasped and started to sob nto her mother's shoulder while her brother

stood frozen with shock and horror. Their dad was ying on the bed as white as

the sheet that was wrapped around him. A stern-looking doctor stood over him
l
looking grave. His case ay open on the floor beside him and a syringe was ying on
l
the bed. Looking up, the doctor gave an unconvincing smile and said he s better,

but not by much. will have to take him to the hospital with me where he can get
I
better care and treatment,” their mother nodded sadly. John, however, raced
forward to his father's side and held tightly on to his hand.
“You can't take him away. You can’t!”

The doctor sighed exasperatedly and tried to explain, t s not safe for him to be
l
near you for too ong because he might be contagious. You do want your dad to
l
get better don’t you?” John nodded but didn't et go. The doctor sighed and bending
down began to prise John's fingers away from his dad’s hands. The boy didn’t et
l
l
go but nstead gave a blood-curdling scream and clung on. Audrey ooked up and
i
sobbed even ouder at seeing her brother getting hurt. The doctor, nfuriated,
l
i
“
grabbed the boy by the arms and yanked him away from the dad. Right. The man
is coming with me and you are staying here with your mother and sister!” John
“
then promptly bit the doctor’s hand. Aeekkkkk!” he screamed and dropped him. He
was now so mad that steam was coming out of his ears. Audrey turned and ran
out of the room, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
“Audrey!” her mother yelled as the girl fled. Desperately trying to be heard over
John's screams and cries.

The doctor yelled, please he has to go, t's not safe for him to stay!” to their
mother. She shook but nodded and with tears n her eyes, she crouched down and
i
gently pulled her son away. She held her son to her chest and stood back as the
doctor carried dad out of the room, waiting for a beat she then followed. As she
left the house she called Audrey to her side and et them say goodbye. The three
l
i
l
stood watching sadly as the doctor got nside the wagon and rode away eading
i
l
their dad nto the fading sunset or maybe his much quicker fading fe.
