SBS Scottish Women’s Premier League
It’s as you were at the top of SWPL 1 following Sunday’s results, but this was due to the fact that
the three main protagonists in the title race all drew their matches.
If results had gone their way, Celtic would have taken over the leadership for the first time
this season but they were left frustrated as they were held to a 2-2 draw by a plucky Spartans
side. Tegan Bowie gave Celtic a tenth minute lead but Spartans hit back quickly through Rosie
McQuillan, who then went on to score a second for the Edinburgh side on the stroke of half time.
Celtic pushed forward after the break but Spartans stood firm and also went close to increasing
their lead but as the game went into injury time, Charlie Wellings grabbed an equaliser for Celtic.
This was followed by the top of the table clash with Glasgow City hosting Rangers and
this proved to be as tight as expected. Both goals came in the early stages of the second half,
Rangers taking the lead through Chantelle Swaby and seven minutes later, Niamh Farrelly struck
to earn City a share of the spoils in their first match under new Head Coach Eileen Gleeson.
Rangers therefore lead the table by two points, going into the international break. .
Hibernian meanwhile got back to winning ways with a 1-0 success against Aberdeen.
Colette Cavanagh scored the only goal of the game, shortly before half time, after her side had
suffered two successive defeats.
Motherwell continued their improving form, beating Hearts 2-0 to take their unbeaten
run to three matches and they are now in a a mid-table position. Leanne Crichton opened the
scoring from the penalty spot on the hour and Kaela McDonald-Nguah sealed the points for her
side with the second goal.
Partick Thistle and Hamilton Academical each picked up an important point as they
shared a 2-2 draw. Clare Docherty gave Partick the lead midway through the first half and an own
goal brought the scores level ten minutes later. Thistle went back in front when Cara McBrearty
scored just after the hour mark but the Accies battled back again, Danielle Pagliarulo netting to
earn her side a point and bring an end to their run of five straight defeats.
With SWPL2 leaders Dundee Utd not playing on Sunday, Glasgow Women had the
opportunity to draw level on points the them when they travelled to Stirling University and
their resulting 5-0 victory means that they
now have an identical record to United and SWPL 1 P W D L F A Pts GD
