Brighouse Town produced one of the results of the day in the Vitality
Women’s FA Cup First Round, winning 3-0 away to FAWNL Division
One North leaders Chester-le-Street Town. Abigail Lee was on
target twice for Brighouse, with Rebecca Gompertz adding the other
goal.
Brighouse will be at home in the next round to Newcastle Utd who defeated Barnsley 3-1.
Katie Barker, Georgia Gibson and Anna Soulsby were the markswomen for Newcastle, with Darcie
Kendall-Greene replying.
Liverpool Feds came through a difficult tie away to FC United of Manchester with a 2-1
victory. Chloe Fisher netted both goals for the Feds inside the opening 24 minutes, before they
needed to withstand a spirited late effort from FC United, in which Kirsty Chambers scored an
injury time goal. The Feds’ reward is a tough one, at home to Northern Premier Division leaders
Huddersfield Town.
Wolverhampton Wanderers also needed to see off lower division opposition when
beating Stourbridge 3-0. League position wise, the Glassgirls were the lowest ranked team left in
the competition but gave a good account of themselves on the day against high flying opponents.
Anna Price broke the deadlock for Wolves eight minutes before half time and they went on to seal
the win with goals after the break from Jade Cross and Kelly Darby. Wolves will be at home in the
Second Round, a fascinating tie against Nottingham Forest.
Two teams having good seasons in the FAWNL Midland Division came face to face and it was
Lincoln City who triumphed 3-1 over Solihull Moors. Toni McHamilton gave Lincoln an eighth
minute lead which was cancelled out midway through the first half by Lois Jefferies, with Amy
Blinkhorn putting the home side back in front just before half time. McHamilton wrapped up the
win for Lincoln when she scored her second, from the penalty spot, ten minutes into the second half.
Lincoln will now be away to West Bromwich Albion.
Leyton Orient marked their first match at their new Hornchurch home with a hard fought
2-1 victory against Actonians Ladies. This did not tell the full story though as the O’s netted twice
in injury time through Egle Trezzi and Scarlett Smith, after Actonians had gone in front with a goal
from Meila D’Santos. Leyton Orient have drawn an away tie in the Second Round at Hounslow
Women.
Billericay Town produced a good performance in beating Maidenhead Utd 4-0. Super
sub Therese Addison made a fantastic impression for the Essex side as she scored all four goals (see
match report).
Billericay have been rewarded with a home tie in the next round against Ipswich Town,
who ended the Cup run of Harlow Town by beating them 9-2. Georgia Allen led the scoring for
the Tractor Girls with a hat-trick, Eloise King and Natasha Thomas each weighed in with a brace,
whilst Abbie Lafayette and Sophie Peskett added a goal apiece.
Southampton FC Women travelled along the South Coast to play AFC Bournemouth
CST and came through a difficult tie with a 5-0 victory, which means that all of the Regional League
sides are now out of the competition. Lucia Kendall and Ella Pusey each netted twice for the Saints
along with Rachel Panting. Southampton will now be at home to Plymouth Argyle.
One of the ties went all the way to a penalty shootout, at Exeter City where visitors
Cheltenham Town went through following a 1-1 draw. Billie Haynes gave Cheltenham the lead,
with Exeter grabbing a late equaliser through Abbie Britton and after extra time could not produce
an outcome, it was Cheltenham who won 4-3 from the spot to earn themselves a trip to
Portsmouth.
The other tie between Wem Town and Boldmere St Michaels fell victim to a
waterlogged pitch and the teams will try again this week, with the winning team travelling to Stoke
City.
The last remaining Third Round Qualifying tie was played after being delayed by the weather
and it was Kent Football Utd who progressed by winning 2-1 against AFC Wimbledon. Megan
Burrows and Amy Payani were on target for Kent, who now face Enfield Town with a trip to
Chichester & Selsey on offer for the winners.
