It has been a difficult season for all clubs, particularly those at
Regional League level where their seasons have been curtailed,
but Moneyfields have ensured it will end with at least one trophy
by winning the SWRFL Subsidiary Cup after coming from behind
to beat Abingdon United 2-1 in the Final.
We talked to Moneyfields captain Sophie Kingsley-
Cabell, who praised her team for coming from behind to win the
Final on Sunday, and revealed that the club is already preparing
next season, whichever league they will be in:
WSS: Well done on a fine win on Sunday, how good was
it to mare sure you will finish the season off with some
silverware?
SKC: Thank you! It was amazing to finish the game in the
manner we did on Sunday. The first half was not one of our best,
so it was down to us to change that in the second half as we
believe in ourselves, not just as individuals, but as a team and
squad too. We were the dominant team in the second half, and to
equalise when we did was hugely important as the second goal
of the game was always going to be important. For us to then
score in the last five minutes was amazing and I think overall,
deserved, but massive credit to Abingdon United Women FC for pushing us all the way in the
Cup Final, it really was a game of two halves! We still have the PDFA Cup Final v Portsmouth
FC Women on Thursday 3rd June, which is the Portsmouth District Cup Final, so this will be
our final game this season. We are certainly hoping for more silverware come Thursday night,
but it will be a massive test, which the squad are very much looking forward to!
WSS: As you said, you needed to do it the hard way by coming from behind,
having trailed to a first half goal, but were you always confident that you could
turn it around?
SKC: Yes definitely, we didn’t get going until 30 minutes in and we deserved to go behind as
Abingdon were playing very well, however we started to play and should have equalised before
half time. After a good and positive team talk at half time, I knew we had the quality on the
pitch and also on the bench too, and we came out for the second half, on the front foot with a
deserved equaliser through Ciara Boylan, who played brilliantly. Paiger (Paige Seeley) then
came on and with her pace, changed the dynamics of the game, and she was in the right place
at the right time at the back post with a great finish to score the winner and the celebration said
it all, showing how much it meant to whole team!
WSS: The win came on the back of your semi final win against AFC Bournemouth
on penalties, you have certainly had to do it the hard way to win this trophy?
SKC: Oh absolutely, the semi final was so nail biting, like the Final, but more so in the shootout,
as it can be a lottery! The game was quite even possession wise, with both teams having good
chances to score, but our goalkeeper in particular, Lauren Sayler made two outstanding saves
near the end of the 90 to take it into the shootout where you always have a chance. It was up
and down, as we missed, they missed, they missed, we missed, but Lauren came the rescue with
two fantastic penalty saves to take us into the final. It was a gritty, determined performance
and really showed the mentality of the group which put us in good stead for the final as we
found the way to win on both occasions which was brilliant.
WSS: Are you confident that you can build on this success and take it into next
season?
