Abingdon Utd 1 Moneyfields 2
Moneyfields claimed the Southern Region League
Subsidiary Cup, beating Abingdon United 2-1 in an
exciting conclusion to a competition which allowed the
successful return of competitive football after the
curtailment of the league season.
Having been outplayed by a sparkling United in
the first half, Moneys dug deep to find an effective
response and then grab a late winner through sub Paige
Seeley.
Right from the first whistle, Abingdon were
sharp and inventive with their forward trio of Kiera
Isaac, Molly Lygo and Tiana Russell-Cartwright causing

players had gone close before Russell-Cartwright opened
the scoring on 16 minutes. Lauren May set up the chance for the attacker to turn sharply and fire
high past Lauren Sayler from 15 yards.
Further half chances fell United's way with Sayler saving well from Isaac, then May having
a long range shot deflected inches wide on 29 minutes. Unable to impose any real control or
forward momentum, Moneyfields battled hard to stay in the game, defending several corners very
effectively and reaching the break with a minimal deficit.
A reshuffled Moneyfields line up with Sheree Bell-Jack introduced in attack, Meghan
McKeag in defence and Roxy Lee-Stewart going into the back four created a more even aspect to
the match. Even so, Isaac nearly added a second before Moneys’ first really dangerous effort on
the hour, Ciara Boylan having a shot deflected just wide of Hannah Cox's goal.
It was Boylan who netted the equaliser on 66 minutes. Bell-Jack hit a low cross which
reached Kim Whitcombe beyond the far post. A run to the byline and cut back found Boylan free
to fire home from six yards.
Lygo nearly restored United's lead soon after with a shot that flew inches over and Isaac
tested Sayler with a low shot but it was Moneys who found the winner on 85 minutes, a neat build
up setting Seeley free on the right of goal to shoot past Cox. Moneys then used all their experience
and determination to close out the game very effectively for a hard earned and satisfying victory.
Abingdon United contributed fully to a most enjoyable occasion in difficult blustery
conditions. Russell-Cartwright was awarded player of the match for her goal and tireless link up
play on the right but it was Moneys who took home the Subsidiary Cup.
