Glasgow City are the leaders in the home straight in the SWPL 1 season although they did
see their winning run checked on Sunday.
Scott Booth’s side were held to a goalless draw by Hibernian and saw their lead
trimmed, but still with matters very much in their hands.
This result was followed up on Wednesday night with a 4-1 victory over Hearts.
Hayley Lauder gave City an eighth minute lead and after Mariel Kaney equalised early in the
second half, Janine van Wyk put City back in front with a fierce 20-yard strike and they went
on to add further goals through Niamh Farrelly and Aoife Colvill. This means that City head
the table by three points, with two matches left to play.
Celtic look to be the team with the most realistic chance of catching them, following
two fine away wins. Kelly Clark and Sarah Ewens scored the goals, with Rachel McLauchlan
replying, as Celtic won the Old Firm derby match 2-1 against Rangers.
The Hoops then won 1-0 away to Hibernian to stay on the leaders’ heels. Caitlin Hayes
scored the only goal of the game, heading in following a corner on the stroke of half time.
Rangers went into their midweek meeting with Forfar Farmington needing a
victory to keep their title hopes alive and they duly delivered, running out 4-0 winners. Daina
Bourma gave Rangers the lead in the first half and after the break, they added further goals
through Sam Kerr, Chantelle Swaby and Lizzie Arnot.
Spartans have enioyed a good week, which has left them in the driving seat for a top
half finish. On Sunday, they won 3-0 against Forfar Farmington, Rebecca Galbraith opening
the scoring four minutes ahead of the interval - the striker then going on to have a remarkable
three further goals disallowed for offside. Katherine Smart increased their lead midway
through the second half and Louise Mason wrapped up the scoring with the third, nine
minutes before half time.
