Moneyfields 1 AFC Bournemouth 1
(AFC Bournemouth won 4-3 on penalties)
AFC Bournemouth progressed to earn a
rematch against Southampton Women's FC in
the Vitality FA Women's Cup after a penalty
shootout win over Moneyfields in their First
Qualifying Round tie. The match ended 1-1 after
a fiercely competitive encounter between
Southern Region League Premier Division rivals
and the Cherries edged the spot kicks 4-3.
The first half was a tight affair of few
clear cut moments as the teams cancelled each
other out and defences dominated. Cherries'
Gemma Hillier had the first chance in the 8th
minute, guiding a shot wide on Lauren Sayler's
goal. Kim Whitcombe created Moneys' first
opportunity with a right side corner on 19
minutes which found Kim Stenning for a close
range header, well kept out by Bournemouth Helen Corbin in a battle for the ball with Emma Eldridge
keeper Katie Scadding. (www.jamesprickett.co.uk).
Bournemouth's were moving the ball
with more confidence than the hosts but without threatening any real damage until first half
added time when Molly Clark intercepted a loose clearance 20 yards from goal and lofted a
first time shot over Sayler to give the visitors an interval lead.
Bournemouth resumed on the front foot and penned Moneys back for much of the
early part of the second half. Clark's corner deliveries caused several dangerous moments
and Sayler saved well from Cherries skipper Maisy Smith on 57 minutes. Hillier had another
effort deflected wide and Clark had a couple of powerful shots from distance well held.
A double substitution gave Moneys new life and they started to find their attacking
flair. The hosts forced Bournemouth back as spaces started to appear in a previously tight
defence. It was no surprise when Paige Seeley fashioned the equaliser with run down the
right and an inviting cross well finished by Whitcombe at the far post on 75 minutes.
The match ended in thrilling style as both teams sought to grab the honours. Both
keeper made excellent saves, Sayler somehow turning wide a powerful shot from six yards
out in the final minute to take the match to penalties.
Successful conversions by Katie Kingshott, Clark, Katelyn Wort and Hillier allied to
a good save by Scadding gave Bournemouth the edge and sealed progress to the Second
Qualifying Round, whilst Moneys went out on penalties for the second year in a row. Both
teams played with great commitment and both should be strong contenders in the Southern
Region League campaign ahead.
