Winchester City Flyers 2 Kidlington 0
Winchester City Flyers progressed to the
Second Round of the Southern Region
League Cup with a 2-0 home win over
       Kidlington Youth.
The Premier Division hosts were given
a good battle by their Division One North
opponents in an enjoyable match for the
spectators but it was Flyers who eventually
converted two of their many second half
chances and found a way to beat inspired
       Kidlington goalkeeper Emily Murphy.
An early header saw Murphy tip the ball Emily Muprhy makes a save from Kelly Routledge
to safety via the woodwork but Kidlington (www.jamesprickett.co.uk).
generally coped very well with the early pressure
and then created some chances of their own as an even half progressed. Flyers keeper
Georgia Jenkins was called into action on 23 minutes, saving well from Courtney
Sumner. A header from a corner on 26 minutes nearly gave the visitors the lead but flew
       just wide.
Flyers had been frustrated up till the break despite getting into promising positions
through good passing but this situation changed almost from the restart. The ball was
moved more quickly and the half time changes in shape and personnel led to a succession
       of chances.
Georgia Allen was denied by a fine Murphy save on 46 minutes and Libby
Wilkinson went close two minutes later. Kidlington also went on the attack and the
chances came thick and fast in a frantic passage of play up till the hour mark. Abi Haynes
drew a fine save from Jenkins then delivered three corners which were scrambled clear
by the hard pressed Flyers defence.
Gradually the hosts started to take control with Sharna Capel-Watson combining
well with Allen and substitute Lia Francis to create openings and testing Murphy who
appeared almost unbeatable with a series of fine saves. It took a superbly struck 20 yard
effort from Charlotte Warhurst to open the scoring on 68 minutes, the ball flying beyond
the grasp of the leaping Kidlington keeper for a stunning goal.
Flyers added a second not long after, Francis converting from close range but the
visitors felt strongly that there had been a clear foul on a defender in the build up to the
       goal.
The home team saw out the game comfortably to seal their progress into the second
round of the League Cup but both teams had played well in an entertaining contest.
