Basingstoke Town 1 Shanklin 1
       (Basingstoke won 5-4 on penalties)
Basingstoke Town progressed to the semi final
stage of the Hampshire FA Trophy with a shootout
win over Shanklin after a well contested 1-1 draw
over 90 minutes. Town, of County League Division
Two had done very well to match the Isle of Wight
visitors who are currently leading County Division
One. A single save by Erin Davis-Donne allied to
five well taken kicks saw the hosts through.
Both sides had enjoyed periods of dominance
and had created chances but both goalkeepers
were in fine form and foiled attackers repeatedly
with excellent saves. Basingstoke started the better
creating a big early chance through the very
productive wing play of April Charlton but the shot Charlotte Hull is challenged by Ceri Kilcullen
was saved by Kirren Shaw. (www.jamesprickett.co.uk).
Charlton went close with a run and shot from a
tight angle which hit the outside of the post on 18 minutes. It took until 45 minutes for
the visitors to threaten but to two well delivered Chloe Parkes corners led to a powerful
drive by Sienna Brennen tipped away by Davis-Donne.
Shanklin built on this on the restart, pressing Basingstoke back but a well worked
Stoke counter led to the opening goal. There was plenty to do when the ball was laid off
for Beth Lowe 20 yards out but the strike was true, hit low into the far corner on 50
minutes. Shanklin continued to press and were rewarded on the hour with a penalty well
       converted by Parkes.
Shaw made a brave save at the feet of a home attacker but Davis-Donne was far
busier, three times keeping her team on terms with fine blocks from close range efforts as
further Parkes corners caused mayhem in front of goal. In the last quarter Basingstoke
regained control of the match but Shaw and her defence stood firm to bring about a spot
       kick decision.
Both sides showed good technique in converting the first eight penalties but Davis-
Donne held the ninth and the hosts settled the deal with a fifth successful effort and
ensure a semi final place after a good contest.
Basingstoke Town will play away to Gosport Borough in the semi finals, to take place
       on Sunday 12th March.
