Sunday was a great day for Briton Ferry Llansawel as they
reached their first major Final with a 3-0 victory over
Aberystwyth Town in the FAW Women’s Cup semi finals.
Ferry goalkeeper Courtney Young admitted that the
result hasn’t quite sunk in yet but, whilst wanting to acquit
themselves well on the day, insisted that promotion at the
end of the season is still the main objective:
WSS: Many congratulations on your win on
Sunday and on reaching the Welsh Cup Final, has it
sunk in yet that you have got there?
CY: There's still quite a buzz within the team after reaching
the final, we didn't really have time for it to sink in properly
as our heads turned straight to the next game vs
Pontardawe as winning the league and gaining promotion
is our main priority reaching a cup final has just come as a
massive bonus to the club. But I'm sure it'll sink in soon.
WSS: Being a club currently outside the top flight,
do you think that makes it an even bigger
achievement for the club?
CY: I think reaching a cup final is a massive occasion and achievement for any club regardless
of what flight they are in, although we are outside the top flight and are the underdogs I feel like
as a team with the fixtures that we have had in this cup run, we didn't expect anything less of
ourselves. We definitely think we deserve to be a top flight team and this cup run has just proved
that we are, but nevertheless this game is massive for us and we are proud to be there.
WSS: You would have gone into the semi final against Aberystwyth as underdogs
but how big of a boost was Lowri Baker's early goal?
CY: Although most would say that we were the underdogs, we believed that we were there for
a reason, we had nothing to prove and no pressure on ourselves going into the game, we were
just grateful to have the opportunity to play in a semi final. We knew Aberystwyth would come
out strong after already losing a semi final the week before and we were prepared for that. As
a team we know we are very strong on set pieces and we knew when we got one we had to take
our chances, that's exactly what we did, we pride ourselves on our set pieces and are harsh on
ourselves when they don't come off. Lowri scoring from the first corner of the game really put
us in the driving seat and helped us settle into the game and coming in at 1-0 half time really
gave us confidence to push on in the second half.
WSS: How big a moment do you think it will be for Lowri Ridings, who has given
so much to the women's game in Wales?
CY: Lowri is a massive part of the team and we wouldn't be where we are without her.
Personally, I have played with Lowri for years for different teams and she always has the same
impact. Lowri is proud to be our club captain and I know the girls go out and not only play for
the badge but they play for her also. She puts her body on the line every week, saving the team
time after time and her experience shines through when she plays. I know Lowri will relish the
opportunity to play in this final as will all the girls.
WSS: What are your thoughts on playing Cardiff City in the Final?
CY: Cardiff are a great team who are pushing for the treble and a champions league spot. We
know this won't be an easy game and that we are going into the game as even bigger underdogs
than the semi final. We have only lost two games this season and one of those games was
against Cardiff where we lost 3-1. This was a great result for us considering Cardiff are at the
