The withdrawal of Rugby Borough has caused a re-calculation of the Division One South
table but Coventry Sphinx remain on course for the title, moving closer after beating
Droitwich Spa 4-0. Kirsty Farnsworth led the scoring with a hat-trick and Angel Scandrett
was also on target. Bewdley Town meanwhile climbed up into third place after Lauren
Thompson, Sarah Lojko and Kirsty Roberts gave them a 3-1 victory over Leamington
Lions, who replied through Kitty Jones. Worcester City Development leapt above
Rugby Town in the table after beating them 4-1.
Sheffield’s annual Varsity fixtures between University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam
University saw the latter end a lean run in the series with two wins out of the three games
contested.
Caitlin O’Callaghan put Hallam ahead in the 1s, but Sheffield hit back to quickly level
through Molly Ashman and then clinch a 2-1 win with Ciara Goggin on target in the closing
minutes.
Hallam were 4-1 winners in the 2s fixture. Three goals in the second quarter - by Anaia
Willoughby, Imogen Burnley and Bekah Pratley - put them in a commanding position. Lois
Ratcliffe pulled one back when she converted a spot kick towards the end of the second half,
but hopes of snatching a draw were quickly squashed with Lauren Brogan wrapping up the
scoring.
All the goals came in the second half of the 3s encounter with Faye Broadhead, Ellie
McHugh, Georgie Owens and Katie Robinson on the mark as Hallam ran out 4-0 victors.
Taking charge of Sheffield 1s was Nottingham Forest defender Liv Cooke who was
deputising for Mick Khan. Cooke is a former University player herself. Sheffield’s previous
coaches include both Helen Mitchell and Carla Ward, with notable players featuring Maz
Pacheco, Emily Batty, Izzy Whittle and Cypriot international Konstantina Pafiti.
Notable alumni from the Hallam include Julie Grundy (coach) with Jess Sigsworth, Sam
Tierney and Ashleigh Mills who have all played in the top tiers since the formation of the
FAWSL.
