“No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever
wasted.”- Attributed to Aesop, Greek storyteller
Dear Friend,
It can seem like our world is constantly in crisis, can’t it? Every year, our
teams across the world face sudden emergencies that are impossible to
plan for. In the face of such uncertainty, your steadfast kindness for
people affected by leprosy continues to encourage them.
I’m sure you will remember the news of a military coup in Niger hitting the
headlines. The impacts on ordinary people’s lives were nothing short of
catastrophic.
Niger is one of the poorest countries in the world. Its people have sadly
been no stranger to hunger after decades of droughts and failed
harvests. But while life was already tough in Niger, it became even harder
after the coup.
As the landlocked country’s borders were closed, fuel and food prices
soared. Starvation set in. Some families affected by leprosy were
struggling to eat even one meal a week. It was a terrifying time.
When crisis strikes, people affected by leprosy are the hardest hit and
most ignored.
Through incredible generosity 322 families received emergency food
parcels. Sani, our project manager, travelled to 8 leprosy communities to
deliver the aid despite the risk to his own safety.
“It was such a joy to see people’s hope restored”, he said. “The fight for
survival in Niger is something we are used to. But the compassion
shown helps us realise we are not forgotten.”
Kindness and prayers have been such a blessing to the team and people
affected by leprosy in Niger.
With every blessing,
Peter Waddup, CEO
