THE 2nd BiTS INTERVIEW: CLARE FREE
UK musician Clare Free - passionate songwriter, fabulous singer, guitarist, as well as an exceptional
performer.
BiTS:
Clare, you seem to have had a bit of an hiatus, please tell me why you decided to come back into the
business again to do what you're doing?
CF:
I think there's a lot of things artists need help with, and I
think I can offer them that help. That's part of it and also,
I'd like to do more than just singing. I like to keep myself
very busy. I wanted to go back and do that, and I wanted
to work from home a little bit more as well as I've got
children. I can carry on working with musicians and music
and try and help people.
BiTS:
For some time, you did nothing at all. What were you
doing when you were doing nothing at all?
CF:
Nothing at all [laughing]. Musically, I released an album in
2014, I think it was, but it didn't stay out very long because
it was affected by somebody dying. Then I did a single which
was called Sniper Fire and then I had a baby, so I've been looking
after him and he's just walked into the room. I've been looking after
him and writing for a new album. But for Outlaw, I stopped for a
while because I was drawing cartoons. I stopped doing Outlaw for a Clare Free
while because I had the baby and had to step back from things.
BiTS:
I'm not entirely clear what it is you offer to people. Would you explain it to me?
CF:
I offer PR as I did before. I do a lot of graphics for people because I'm a graphic designer, but the
main thing I'm doing is album release management. Sorry bear with me a second, my son absolutely
hates me being on the phone. Sorry, he's four so being on the phone can be quite challenging.
Normally he'd have been at nursery at this time but obviously not now. Album release management
is the thing that I'm really focusing on because what I find through the PR side of things is that
artists are good at recording music and then they're very good at going on CD Baby and whacking it
up online and that's all fine and then they don't really know what else to do. It's on CD Baby, it's out,
and they're not very good at, well that's a bit of a sweeping statement, but I have noticed a number
of artists aren't very good at things like getting their Spotify profiles all sorted out and releasing the
album in a way that really attracts attention to it, and they're not brilliant at getting their websites
straight and their merchandising straight, so really it pulls the whole package of the artist up to a
much more professional standard than it might do if they just went for a straight PR package.
