EDWARD MEYER INTERVIEW
By
Norman Darwen
Originally from Toronto in Canada, Edward Meyer has recently published two books
of “Remembrances, Reviews and Reflections inspired by the Covers And Pages Of
The First 50 Years of Living Blues Magazine.” Available on Amazon, Blues Chronicles
Vol. 1 covers issues 1 to 148, and Blues Chronicles Vol. 2 issues 149 to 266. Given the
amount of personal involvement Edward has had over the years, and as he started
listening to blues in 1969, it struck me that his books would be very different had
he come to the music slightly later:
“I think the sixties would have been the perfect time - I just missed Rev Davis, Fred
McDowell, Mississippi John Hurt and Skip James, Little Walter, Otis Spann, Magic
Sam, Earl Hooker - but the 70s was a very good time: the birth and proliferation of
blues magazines and books, the birth of blues festivals, clubs that played blues six
nights a week (and some with matinees) and of course I did get to see Muddy, Wolf,
Freddy King, Bukka White, Roosevelt Sykes, and a few others that wouldn’t make it
much past that decade. I do indeed feel blessed to be where I was when I was.”
What is the back story to Blues Chronicles?
