PL: He played instinctively, and he liked playing live and being in the moment and
whatever occurred to him would happen, but I spend my life in a recording studio
so it's home to me. It was always a slow process recording, apart from doing the
initial live take, he would then agonise over whether it was the right part or not. I
mean, usually it was. His instinct was correct normally and so on this album, what
you have is that live instinctive playing from Matt and I think that brings it to life.
BiTS: Tell me something a bit more about ‘Forevermore And Again’. How much of a
problem was it to put this together?
PL: Well, I mean, after Sam found the track, I then used some software called DeMIX
Pro, which is what
Abbey Road used on
The Beatles tracks to
separate John Len-
non and all the parts.
It’s that same
software. So I
separated the acous-
tic from Matt’s
humming so that
Catfish gave me a melody,
and just by working a
bit on the lyric he
had, it was really all
there was in two
sections. I thought those two go together, that goes together and made a lyric and
his melody. I didn't have him singing it, so I had to sing it, and the one line of the song
that instead of humming, he sang the words to, turned out to be the title line. So he's
on the song singing that line as a backing vocal, if you like, to me. So it's his guitar.
You can hear him breathing, especially in the intro, and so that was a totally
unexpected thing. Nobody knew that was there until Sam was going through his
phone in December.
BiTS: Wow! Absolutely incredible. Tell me something about the title track. Was it
your intention to call the album by the track name, or did you have a name for the
album while you were working on it?
PL: We did. Actually, Matt wasn't sure we should call it “Time To Fly”, but the rest of
us were absolutely certain we should. So although in retrospect, it appears to be a
title which reflects what happened to Matt. It was a very strong song live. We used
to start the set with it, and it seemed to me the song that we should base the album
around when we started recording it a couple of years ago before Matt got ill, too ill
to play.
