BEYOND BASICS

with the Horse Stance. Assume a Horse Stance with the feet
parallel. Squeeze the outside edges of the feet inward. When done
properly, the knees will widen and the stance will lower. Incorrectly
squeezing at the thighs will cause the knees to narrow and the
stance to rise. Squeezing the feet creates the stretched rubber
band effect. Relaxing one side will cause weight to shift to the other
just like releasing one end of a rubber band.

                             Self-exploration and seeking the
“way” are great ways for folks to
                                      improve their art

Relaxing one side of the stance will start either a forward or
backward movement creating just enough momentum to start the
           technique.

After over 50 years of watching
           the performances of hundreds
of punches, its hard not to
           come away with observations
           of those performances. One
           observation was the
           differences in the structure of
           how those punches were
           performed. The typical punch
is fully extended and the fist
           tightened at the point of
impact. Analyzing my own punching technique, I discovered that
power diminished at the end of the punch causing the punch to
become a pushing action. Continued analyzation helped to defined
           four punch segments.
