BEYOND BASICS
There are only three basic stances! Forward, Neutral, and Back.
Regardless of how long, wide, high, or low, all will fall into one of
these three stances. “What about… stance”, you ask? We only have
two legs, so there can only be 3 options! A forward stance with
majority of weight on the forward leg, a neutral stance which is
evenly weighted, and a back stance with the majority of weight on
the back leg.
Resisting power will only cause tension
and your center will rise
To explain the importance of
foundation, I use a concept called,
“Be a Rock”!
“Be a Rock” demonstrates how to
“root” a stance to become
immovable. I always used one of my
students who was a petite, 7-year-
old little girl to demonstrate this
concept! I would first demonstrate
a stance’s instability by testing the
stance on an adult. Then
demonstrate on my little student and she would be almost
immovable. I say almost, because if I used all of my strength, I could
move her.
