Introduction

                                          Who would have ever thought
                                          that in 1966 a shy, 14-year-old boy
would be embarking on a journey
                                          that would become a lifelong
passion? A passion in the martial
arts that has now spanned over 50
                                          years.

when I was 11 left a huge hole in
my life. Martial Arts helped to fill
that hole. I was fortunate to find and be included into an extended
martial arts family and community. My teachers became the role
models needed for a fatherless teenager. They laid the foundation
to inspire, motivate, and provide opportunities and to challenge
me to believe that I could achieve any goals I set, and to exceed
           them beyond all expectations.

This isn’t your typical book about a particular style or an
autobiography. Beyond Basics chronicles the discoveries,
innovations, and knowledge gained on the path of evolving into
the martial artists that I am today. Its also about the duty and
responsibility to pass on the knowledge one has gained during a
