When the Heart Says Yes – Sex Education in Schools
The project "When the Heart Says Yes" aims to improve sex education in high schools. Current
programs do not provide enough information about reproductive health and responsible sexual
behaviour, which students have recognised as a serious problem in the community.
The project's objective is to introduce sex education tailored to students in high schools to
ensure that all students have access to accurate and safe information about sexuality.
Students involved in the elective course "School and Community" researched community
problems and decided to focus on the lack of sex education. They conducted a survey which
revealed that most students get information about sexuality independently, often from unreliable
sources, leading to misconceptions. The best approach was proposed to introduce sex education
in schools. They collaborated with several organizations, organized workshops, and worked
with students from the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences and the school doctor.
The project was presented to the Student Council, Parent Council, and Teacher Council, as well
as at the County and State project exhibitions. The final activity was presenting the project to
the City Assembly and formally requesting the introduction of sex education in high schools in
Zagreb.
