How do We Teach Palliative Care in the Curriculum for
General Care Nurses?
It's crucial to integrate palliative care content into the curriculum of nursing and general medical
technician programs. This ensures that future healthcare professionals are well-equipped to
address the complex needs of patients in the terminal stage of illness or those with severe
chronic conditions. The learning process of palliative care begins with understanding the
fundamental principles and goals of palliative care, including pain relief, support for quality of
life, assistance to patients' families, and ensuring a dignified death.
Practical work and simulations across different subjects enable students to develop expertise in
evaluating pain, offering emotional assistance, addressing symptoms, and tailoring care to meet
each patient's unique requirements. A crucial element entails educating about ethical challenges
that could emerge in palliative care, encouraging contemplation regarding honoring patient
autonomy and navigating end-of-life choices.
The lack of a Palliative Care subject in the curriculum for nursing/general medical technician
education is being addressed by incorporating content from several different subjects, providing
outcomes in palliative care without which the student would not be adequately prepared for the
job market. The paper presents curriculum content and its deficiencies.
